My San Diego Trip (by Caleb)

For Asher's 10th birthday he got to go to anywhere in the lower forty-eight states with just mom and dad. He chose Oregon.

As my birthday came around I started thinking of where I wanted to go. Well, I chose San Diego. It wasn't just a random pick. I did a lot of planning and searching, but finally after waiting and timing we were on our flight. It had been my first time on a plane and the views and takeoffs were great (I am going to skip the flying and airport stuff). Later after we got a rental car we went to the Old Spaghetti Factory and had a filling meal then went to the hotel for the night.

The next day we went on a whale watching tour. We saw sea lions, an almost mega pod of dolphins, some of which swam right up near the boat, and of course one whale and it's spout.

After the boat tour we got some Churros and mom got spicy Pad Thai. Then we drove to Coronado on the Coronado bridge and went to a beach there, not for long though because we went Torrey Pines State Park.

We played in the ocean there and drove up a big hill where all the Torrey pine trees were. There was also this big ball of pine needles which was called the "witches broom". In the visitor center we learned that it was a part of the tree that went crazy.

After Torrey pines we went La Jolla and saw a lot of sea lions and seals then walked to a barbeque restaurant and Cold Stone ice cream then went back to the hotel and slept.

The next day we went to a playground then went to The San Diego Zoo.

We saw monkeys, flamingos, hummingbirds, Komodo dragons, elephants, bears, zebras, and giraffes. Those are just a few of the many animals there were. The Zoo was in sections: the Lost Forest, Northern Frontier, Discovery Outpost, Asian Passage, Urban Jungle, Elephant Odyssey, and Africa Rocks. There were two talks. The first one we went to was at Africa rocks it was about a parrot named Taylor.


He can do a chicken sound, two short songs, a fire truck, scream, say "I love you", "cry", go "lalalalalala", bark, and do a cat sound.

After that we had lunch at Treetops Café then went around and made our way to the rhino talk (it was kind of boring). After that we moseyed around the monkeys' cages until we left at five. After the Zoo we went to a Coronado bridge overlook and took some pictures of the city and the bridge.

The next day we flew on a plane back to Tucson.

As we traveled the country, we tried to experience local culture. We didn't have much time in each location, so we thought that one of the best ways to do this quickly was to partake of local foods. Therefore, in addition to our National Park theme , we also had a "local food" theme. As we hit each state, we ate a food famous in that state. Just an example; we didn't go off of this map We quickly came to realize that this is a very subjective endeavor. Before we started, I ignorantly assumed that each state would have one or two "famous" foods, making the selection process easy. Not true. First of all, most of what shows up on lists of foods by state is hardly "famous." It's more like "foods you will definitely find in this state and may or may not find elsewhere." My Family's House (by Jordan)

It all started out with our adoption. We've been waiting for about 3 years to adopt a child. When my dad put the house on Zillow someone's wife wanted to buy it in 10 minutes. But the husband promised his wife a pool. So they didn't buy the house. There were a few others that I can't remember. But finally Melissa and Tim stepped up! They bought the house. We left March fifth. Tim and Melissa have a daughter named Brook. We are on March sixth now and we are enjoying our time at Poinsett State Park!

Lassen Volcanic National Park

We have officially entered the Pacific Ring of Fire. Well, we've technically been in it for the past few months while in California, but none of the parks we've been to have been related... until now. Starting with Lassen, we're about to hit multiple parks built around volcanos. Other than Mt. Saint Helens and that one in Hawaii that never stops, I would have been hard pressed to name another volcano that erupted in this country... ever. But sure enough, Mount Lassen erupted numerous times between 1915 and 1921, doing quite a bit of damage to the surrounding area (there is a section near the mountain called "the devastated area," which is humorous because it's all grown back and looks perfectly normal now). We've had remarkably good weather for our park days, but as you can probably tell from the picture above, that luck ran out at Lassen.
