Our last place before going back to Canada was Valdez. When we got back into Canada we just drove until we felt like stopping. I found dad a place on iOverlander where the road crosses the Donjek River . Jordan got the bunnies out and they ran around a little. Then we crossed back into Alaska to go to Haines (see Haines/Juneau/Glacier Bay ). On the way out of Haines we stopped at Kroschel Films. They rescue wildlife, and we got to see wolves and other animals. Bears can run fast! Kitty the bear likes pie! As a public service, here is a list of things that aren't cheap, in order of not cheapness: Being in Alaska. Traveling to Alaska. Driving to Alaska. Driving an RV to Alaska. We knew going into this stretch of the trip that it would be expensive. We also knew that it would almost certainly be a once in a lifetime experience, so we resolved to spend the money necessary to do what we wanted to do. That said, we weren't going to waste money either. We'd spend what we needed to spend and no more. Before I get into the details of the financial breakdown of our Alaska swing, a disclaimer: I realize that talking about finances is taboo to a lot of people. In creating this post, my goal is twofold. First, as with all blog posts, I'm trying to create an accurate record of our trip that we can revisit in the future. This trip was never designed to be a permanent change in our lives. It was always intended to be a temporary thing, where "temporary" was loosely defined. At the end of the trip, the goal has always been to end in Georgia to live closer to family. By that metric, we're now headed home. Geographically, we just passed through Alaska, the part of the trip that is farthest away from our destination (for those wondering, Homer is the actual farthest location). From here on out, our route will take us roughly in the direction of Georgia rather than away from it. Using time as a metric, we're well past halfway. We've been on the road for just over 18 months now, and we figure it will take another 4 months or so to make it back. We are going to visit some family along the way and be less rigid about scheduling than we have been in the past, so it's tough to pin down an exact number, but we're confident it will be much quicker than 18 months. We got to Haines Hitch-Up RV Park and then we went to the library. Mom made dinner. We went to Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site. At the bridge we saw 5 cubs and 2 mama bears catching fish. One cub even caught one and had a feast! I enjoyed my Tootsie Roll while watching them. Then we went to bed. Bears in Haines, AK The next morning we started packing up to go on a 6 day trip to go to Glacier Bay National Park. We got the Jeep and put the bunnies in it. Then we left for Haines Ferry Terminal. We waited and put the car in lane 1.While waiting, we went inside the waiting room and did a puzzle. When the ferry boarded at the dock, we drove the Jeep into the car section of the Le Conte.
