Journey back from The Last Frontier (by Asher)
Our last place before going back to Canada was Valdez.
When we got back into Canada we just drove until we felt like stopping. I found dad a place on iOverlander where the road crosses the Donjek River. Jordan got the bunnies out and they ran around a little.
Then we crossed back into Alaska to go to Haines (see Haines/Juneau/Glacier Bay).
On the way out of Haines we stopped at Kroschel Films. They rescue wildlife, and we got to see wolves and other animals.
After Kroschel Films we went to a place to watch bald eagles.
That night we stayed at a roadside pullout.
We started driving on the Cassiar Highway. The Cassiar cuts off a few hours but it's narrow and more curvy. Tonight we stayed at Morchuea Lake Rec Site. There were so many potholes!
We stayed at Beaumont Provincial Park. We arrived there after dark and got the only pull-through site there.
We stayed in the parking lot of the Jasper National Park Icefield Center. Up on top of the mountains we could see the thick icefield.
We did part of a trail called Wilcox Pass Trail. One side of the valley was ice covered while the other side looked like desert. We had lunch at a waterfall.
Then we went on the Icefield Tour. A shuttle took us to a place where we got on a huge bus called an Ice Explorer. The Ice Explorer took us down a 36% grade and on to Athabasca Glacier. The part that we were able to walk on was basically a big ice parking lot.
We brought cups this time so we easily drank water from a glacier. The glacier part wasn't that interesting because we've been on a glacier before but the Ice Explorer was really neat.
After that we went to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, a glass horseshoe 918 feet above the ground.
Everyone went on the skywalk, even mom. When we got back to the RV we packed up and left for Lake Louise overflow camping.
We went to Lake Louise. It was so crowded and didn't feel like it was in a National Park at all. We did a trail across the lake from the popular trail and there weren't many people on it. The lake's famous blue color was reduced due to smoke from forest fires.
We crossed back into the Contiguous US.
