Henry Horton State Park

We've been very fortunate in the weather we've encountered since this trip started. We've had one or two hot days and a few scattered showers here and there (mostly overnight), but that's about it. I really can't complain at all.

But you have to take the good with the bad in this lifestyle (and let's be honest, in all areas of life), and we didn't win the weather lottery at Henry Horton. We were at the park for about 4 days, and it rained on and off for much of that time.

That's not to say we didn't enjoy our stay, though. We honestly needed a little down time, so the rain forced us to stay inside and not worry about filling time with activities. We also got to bed at a decent time, which is always nice. We were even able to squeeze a campfire in, over which I grilled some salmon, seriously over-cooking it in the process.

The rain did let up for the last day or so, and we used that time to walk around the park. It's a beautiful park (we booked it on a recommendation from another camper who had been there before). It's on a river, and there are walking/hiking trails throughout. The kids were able to play in the shallows of the river a bit (it was running high and fast due to the rain, so swimming was out).

I was able to take a long walk with Jordan one evening. The park has a half dozen playgrounds scattered throughout, and we stopped at each one. Her favorite was one that was made up of all different kinds of monkey bars. She tackled them all without touching the ground.

The park had two rescue birds that were unable to be reintroduced to the wild. Buddy the red-tailed hawk and a great horned owl whose name escapes me. They seemed to perk up when Jordan brought the bunnies to see them!

This park was an hour south of Nashville, and we never did make it into the city, but that's fine. I've never been to Nashville (only driven through), but I also don't have a burning desire to go. This also meant we never did get to try Nashville hot chicken. We've been trying to sample famous food from each state, and that was one of our options for Tennessee. I'll be writing more on food in a future post.
