Nana and Gramps Coming (by Asher)

(KA) means Kids Activity. Because there’s a lot in these next few days, I’m writing daily.

Friday 1/7 - Nana and Gramps flew in for the week. We went to the Ice Cream Social and I got vanilla ice cream with M&M's and rainbow sprinkles in it (KA). 


Saturday 1/8 - We had breakfast over at Nana and Gramps’ cabin. We played bingo and we were the only ones there so one of us got a prize every time (KA)! There was an RC car track there and for an hour there were a bunch of RC cars for anyone to use (KA). We drove them around the track but mostly we had an RC car fight. The cars were different, because they could drive upside down as well. For Caleb's 10th birthday present he could pick anywhere to go in the lower 48 states. He picked San Diego, and dad, mom, and Caleb left after lunch. Nana and Gramps stayed in the RV while they were gone and we got a little spoiled. That night we went to the fire pits but they were full so we came back and watched YouTube. A little later we went back to the fire pits and Jordan and I played pickleball at the pickleball courts.


Sunday 1/9 - We watched Animaniacs. We tried to go to a face painting activity, but it changed so we got temporary tattoos (KA). We went to the pool and hot tub. We tried to go to a Kids Movie Activity but there was no one there so we came back and watched the movie Wall-E at home. We (mostly Jordan and Nana) made chocolate chip cookies. That night, we watched the movie Ice Age 1.


Monday 1/10 - Jordan and I did a kids' fitness challenge (KA) and we each got a small prize. We went to a zoo called Reid Park Zoo and even though it wasn't San Diego Zoo, we saw a lot of animals.

After Reid Park Zoo, we went to Reid park and saw the ducks in the pond.












On the way back from the zoo, we went to Dairy Queen and got ice cream. After we got back, we had pizza. I liked to say that ice cream was dinner and pizza was dessert. Afterwards, we watched Dude Perfect on YouTube and watched Ice Age 2.


Tuesday 1/11 - We made butterscotch chip cookies for when Caleb, mom, and dad got home, then we went to pick them up from the airport. Dad hooked the camera up to the TV and Caleb showed us the pictures from his trip.


Wednesday 1/12 - After we went to the morning social and got free food (KA), we took Nana and Gramps to Saguaro NP East. We went on a short trail and took a picture in front of a saguaro cactus. Caleb, Jordan and I climbed a big rock in one of my scariest rock climbs. On the way back, we got Arizona food: Sonoran hot dogs.


Thursday 1/13 - I went to a (KA) frisbee tic-tac-toe activity which turned into us throwing frisbees around. Afterwards, we went to the pool with Nana and Gramps. We went on a bike ride with one of the kids at the campground. Then we went to Popsicle and Bubble Fun (KA). Caleb brought his huge bubbles and it was a big hit. That night, Mom and dad went on a date, Caleb and I played euchre with Nana and Gramps and Jordan watched a movie.


Friday 1/14 - Nana and Gramps left.


[Editor's note: I hope you enjoyed it, Asher. I expect that your kids will enjoy it just as much in the future when we serve them ice cream for dinner and watch multiple movies per day!]

As we traveled the country, we tried to experience local culture. We didn't have much time in each location, so we thought that one of the best ways to do this quickly was to partake of local foods. Therefore, in addition to our National Park theme , we also had a "local food" theme. As we hit each state, we ate a food famous in that state. Just an example; we didn't go off of this map We quickly came to realize that this is a very subjective endeavor. Before we started, I ignorantly assumed that each state would have one or two "famous" foods, making the selection process easy. Not true. My Family's House (by Jordan)

It all started out with our adoption. We've been waiting for about 3 years to adopt a child. When my dad put the house on Zillow someone's wife wanted to buy it in 10 minutes. But the husband promised his wife a pool. So they didn't buy the house. There were a few others that I can't remember. But finally Melissa and Tim stepped up! They bought the house. We left March fifth. Tim and Melissa have a daughter named Brook. We are on March sixth now and we are enjoying our time at Poinsett State Park!

Lassen Volcanic National Park

We have officially entered the Pacific Ring of Fire. Well, we've technically been in it for the past few months while in California, but none of the parks we've been to have been related... until now. Starting with Lassen, we're about to hit multiple parks built around volcanos. Other than Mt. Saint Helens and that one in Hawaii that never stops, I would have been hard pressed to name another volcano that erupted in this country... ever. But sure enough, Mount Lassen erupted numerous times between 1915 and 1921, doing quite a bit of damage to the surrounding area (there is a section near the mountain called "the devastated area," which is humorous because it's all grown back and looks perfectly normal now). We've had remarkably good weather for our park days, but as you can probably tell from the picture above, that luck ran out at Lassen.
