River Reflections RV Park

As Michael hooked up everything, I sat outside content... for hours. The red winged black birds were so much fun to watch!

We had the best site in the whole RV park. It was next to the peaceful Feather River. In between our RV and the river was a big grassy area, shaded with trees and bordered with outdoor hanging lights. I love these outdoor hanging lights!

The kids and I had a fire and roasted chicken and apple sausages. Caleb happily raced his scooter with lots of other kids in the park. Michael went and checked out the town of Oroville. When he came back, we took a walk together. The camp projected "Encanto" on the side of a cabin and topped it off with popcorn and glow bracelets. This was a delightful campsite.

The next beautiful morning, we packed up everything and Michael brought us to the dam. We walked, biked or scootered the mile across the dam and back. The water is very low right now. When they released the dam during the infamous 2017 catastrophe, it flooded our whole RV park except for one RV spot up on a hill.

The dam is the tallest in the US at 770' high (taller than the Hoover Dam), but it didn't feel like it. It is build up on either side with rocks, dirt and grass and slopes down. I wasn't afraid. Because of the drought, the whole long and perfectly paved boat launch was fully exposed and at the bottom was a newly made parking lot and another boat launch. The kids and I loved riding down it!

This is the river side of the dam. I wanted to roll down the hill.

Here is the new main spillway. It is now 7.6 feet thick and is anchored into the bedrock with bolts up to 25 feet long. It is as wide as a 12 lane highway. The emergency spillway, not pictured, was created to be 750 feet wide and can hold 25 football fields.

On the way back to the RV park, we stopped by the Feather River Fish Hatchery. It had a salmon and steelhead fish ladder. We even saw a few big fish in it! Then we toured the hatchery pools and saw millions of tiny fish a few inches long. They were going to release these fish into the San Francisco Bay area later in the week via trucks.
