Middlefork RV Park
One of our most beautiful drives was going to Fairplay, CO through the White River National Forest on Highway 70. We saw some bright yellow aspens that took my breath away. There was a scenic tunnel that we went through. The rushing river below us and the mountains on either side of us were mesmerizing! I could definitely live in Colorado.
After we went south at Breckenridge (no snow on the ski slopes yet), we went over the Hoosier Pass at elevation 10,539 feet. We were going to visit a great friend from when we went to Dunwoody Baptist Church over 20 years ago. Lindsay and her husband, Corey and their dog, Norman are so wonderful!
We got to our campsite and it was locked - closed for the season. We drove to Safeway to get gas, groceries, make our lunch and get our booster shot for Covid. We found a campsite right in Fairplay called Middlefork RV Park.
Our site was by a creek! The campground itself was sitting below some stores and a parking lot which you had to use to get down to the campground awkwardly. It was quiet and had electricity, which was good since it was getting to the low 30s at night and our furnace was not working. Michael looked at the furnace and did some research online. He narrowed it down to a part and I ordered it so we could pick it up on our way to our next stop. (We later found out that our furnace would return to normal after we got down below a certain elevation. Just one of the many things that we have learned.)
In the morning, we went to a small Presbyterian church called South Park Community Church (yes, like the cartoon; it is rumored to be based on this area) All the people, about 60, were friendly. We went over to a small house afterwards and had some refreshments and talked. At home, Jordan decided to clean the RV and make dinner of smoothies, crescent rolls, salads and corn! Go Jordan!
We did school and the kids worked on their costumes this week. I also went on a beautiful walk with Lindsay and Norman. The high elevation makes me get winded pretty quickly. The day was sunny and so nice! I loved talking with her. Norman is two and so cute! Lindsay likes collecting rocks!
The RV park was on the site of an old mine and had free panning for gold. We borrowed some equipment, dug some dirt from the side of the hill, brought it to the partially frozen trough and sifted it. Our hands froze. We found about a dozen pieces of gold dust!

On Tuesday night, our microwave stopped working. Michael watched some YouTube videos, took it apart and put it back together, changing nothing, but it worked again! Wahoo! He is a champ!
The next day, the kids and I finished panning the dirt we had not finished. The sunlight makes such a huge difference in seeing the gold shine! Then we headed 4 minutes away to Corey and Lindsay's house.
They are doing a ton of construction projects on their house. It was built in the late 1800s! The roofers were putting new shingles on the roof. We left and went grocery shopping for dinner. I made some sloppy joes, cut up apples and caramel, and got some french fries and chips. Lindsay made a delicious salad.
We headed over about 4:30 and they showed us around their beautiful property and their home. It was neat hearing about all their plans and getting to see what was done so far. They have a root cellar too, right under their kitchen! Their kitchen and bathroom are mostly done and look great! Their flooring looks awesome! She gave me a Colorado heart rock! Michael mentioned that "it was so nice to have adult conversation." I agree, it was lovely!
